Early Orthopedics, Myofunction and Orthodontics

The early treatment of developing malocclusions can be beneficial to your growing child. We can discuss opportunities to mitigate the impact these aberrant patterns of growth have on your child. Treatment opportunities are also available for the fully manifest malocclusion in the young adolescent and adult, as well as the individual suffering from Sleep Apnoea and TMJ disease brought on by occlusal, cranial and posture factors.

The concept of Early Intervention is generally centred on establishing nasal breathing, with lips closed and a correct swallow. Some of our treatment protocols are recommended within the first few days after birth. Most are recommended several years later following the impact that insufficient airways, mouth breathing and aberrant swallowing has had on the growing child.

Myofunctional Treatment

The picture on the left is a pre-treatment photograph of a 7 ½ year old child with an upper jaw that has not grown harmoniously with the lower jaw. The child is a habitual mouth breather with an incorrect swallow.

The picture on the right is 2 years following treatment with a myofunctional trainer wherein the child was taught to swallow correctly, breathing through the nose with lips together. No orthodontic treatment was required.

Myofunctional & Orthopaedic Treatment

These pictures are of a similar situation but in a more advanced condition. The picture on the left is a pre-treatment photograph of a 9 year old child. The child is also a habitual mouth breather with an aberrant swallow.

The picture on the right is 18 months later in the final stages of treatment with a removable upper jaw growth guiding appliance and a fixed myofunctional trainer. No orthodontic treatment was required.

Myofunctional , Orthopaedic & Orthodontic Treatment

These pictures are also representative of an underdeveloped upper arch but in a teenage child. The child previously had tonsils and adenoids removed and mouth breathed with an aberrant swallow.

The picture on the right is 21months later following orthopaedic, orthodontic and myofunctional treatment.
